We had so much fun in room 106! The Global Day of Play was a great deal of fun, and the kids were exhausted by the end of the day- play really is hard work! The kids decided on a stuffed animal/movie day for our latest class celebration and I loved getting to meet their favorite stuffed animals. We watched one of my favorite childhood movies, Milo and Otis. I was excited it was a first time viewing for most.
Math-
Kindergarteners are continuing with numbers 1-100 and counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. We challenge ourselves by counting by twos starting with an odd number.
First Graders- We will be finishing up our place value unit next week. During our global play day, I was so happy to see 1st graders challenging each other to build more than 1,000 with place value blocks.
We haven’t yet reached our money/time unit in K or 1st, but I have been doing short mini-lessons on them both in preparation of units to come. Please practice with real coins at home if you can.
Reading- I am very impressed by the growth they are all making. To challenge ourselves in the month of February, we are tallying up all of the books we read in class to see how many we can read. The class is sustaining silent reading from their book boxes for over a half hour, which is really impressive.
Our comprehension strategy focus next week will be on monitoring comprehension- learning to stop when things aren’t making sense and fixing it up.
Writing- This week we focused on using capitals when writing a proper noun. We also practiced using commas in a list.
Valentine’s Day- I sent a list home last week of all the students in the class, please let me know if you need another. If your child is planning on bringing Valentines to share with friends on Friday, please make certain he/she has a valentine for each member of the class. I have a fun day planned. We will be learning a lot of math through a box of candy hearts; graphing, addition/subtraction, estimation, and counting. We will decorate some heart shaped cookies, and brainstorm our own candy heart messages. Valentine’s Day is a wonderful day to appreciate/build community in the class!! Please don’t send Valentines with nut-based candies attached (Reeses Hearts for example).
